Dennis Farmer teaches music at the Antioch School thanks to the Emily Bailey Fund. This is his second full-year residency. All students have the opportunity to participate in this music experience each week. Students in the OG are playing band and orchestra instruments two mornings a week with Dennis in addition to their singing, piano, ukulele and guitar play with Chris. YG students have a ‘music experience’ on Thursdays that involves singing, drumming, movement, recorders, composition and notation as main components to a full music experience. Pre/Kindergarten Students also share in a Thursday music experience that uses music to enhance other learning while exposing them to sound, musical form, instruments, drumming, movement and singing.

The children work together creating performances ranging from after school band and orchestra concerts to music videos and plays featuring singing, dance, acting and instrumental arrangements all created and collaborated during the school day.

The Antioch School allows opportunity for children to explore music at their own pace as well as in groups with many students playing multiple instruments and playing alone, tutoring other students or practicing in small ensembles throughout the day during their ‘free’ time. It is not unusual, in fact, it is commonplace, to see small clusters of students throughout the school working either on a piece they are performing in ensemble, something they have decided to learn and are working out the notes on their own or composing something completely new. This musical activity is encouraged by the staff and relished by the students.
